Step Gallery, currently located in the renovated Grant Street Studios building in downtown Phoenix, had its start as a “mystery” gallery which would appear at different locations throughout Tempe and became a regular exhibition space by the mid-1990s. Along with the Harry Wood Gallery, this gallery serves first as a venue for Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibitions, which represent one of the requirements for the fulfillment of the MFA degree under School of Art and Graduate Education procedures. The Step Gallery is inside GSS's two story atrium, which many students use to exhibit large scale sculptures, conduct performances, or can serve as a reception space for large crowds and events.

Northlight Gallery at the ASU Herberger Institute's School of Art exhibits a broad spectrum of photo-based work by emerging, underrepresented and internationally recognized artists. The gallery serves the university community and the public with exhibitions and gallery talks by national and international artists and is vital to the education of students earning a degree in photography. This gallery also hosts Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibitions for graduate students focusing in Photography. Northlight Gallery was founded on the Tempe campus by Professor Jack Stuler and MFA photo students in 1972 at a time when the medium was struggling to be recognized locally as a fine art. Now over 4 decades later, photography and related digital technologies dominate contemporary art as well as our daily lives. The new Northlight Gallery is housed at the Grant Street Studios building in downtown Phoenix, offering greater visibility and possibilities for public engagement.
