Herberger Institute Office of Student Success

The Herberger Institute Office of Student Success is situated in the College of Design South building. The Herberger Institute undergraduate advising team and the Student Engagement and Creative Career Services team are housed here. The Herberger Office of Student Success supports undergraduate students by providing various services ranging from: student advising, class enrollment, class overrides, medical withdrawals, internship and career resources and many other services.
Undergraduate students can make an appointment via phone, MyASU or in-person. The Herberger Institute has mandatory advising for all new students entering the University prior to enrollment in their first semester at ASU; this includes both first-year and transfer students. Students are assigned an advisor according to their major.

InnovationSpace
NOVUS 260
The InnovationSpace program provides students with a unique opportunity to complete a real-world project that prepares them for life. Teams of students from all majors spend one to two semesters researching, developing, and refining concepts by using the Integrated Innovation model of learning. This transdisciplinary program, with faculty from a variety of colleges, allows for students to learn new collaborative and creative skills from disciplines including design, business, and engineering.
Students learn how to approach problems that are not structured and do not have one obvious solution. The space in Novus gives students the ability to collaborate and protype their ideas. Projects range from creating a universal design for a hotel room, designing a trauma-informed school for the communities of South Mountain, and exploring the Circular Economy for Small Format Packaging. Red Square
Basement
On the basement level of Design North is an indoor atrium known as “red square” because of the color of its stained concrete floor! This space is a popular location for exhibitions and reviews throughout the semester, including Super Pins, which feature the work of all first year students; the annual graphic design poster show; and the senior graphic design clock project, where students pick a social cause and build and design a clock that embodies that movement.
Design and Arts Library

The Design and Arts Library is situated right off the entrance in the Design North building. The library is staffed by professional librarians and student workers around the clock to assist visitors in navigating its resources. The Design and Arts Library holds over 50,000 items, including books, periodicals, CD-ROMs, video recordings and microforms related to design, architecture and landscape architecture, interior design, industrial design, and housing and planning. Known as one of the quieter and more secluded libraries on campus, it is a perfect location to escape and work on classwork and other projects.
The Bridge
Joining Design North and Design South is a lecture space we call “The Bridge.” This space is used for classes, formal lectures from visiting designers, events, and especially as a review space for student work. Along the walls, as in Red Square and Tall Hall, there are fabric corkboards where projects are displayed and students “pitch” their designs to firms and other design professionals. Also, the Bridge functions as a much cooler alternative to get between buildings during the hotter months in Arizona!

Tall Hall
Adjacent to the first and second year studios in Design South is Tall Hall, named for its high ceilings. This is an extended workspace for students with desks, comfortable chairs, and power for charging laptops and other devices. Additionally, Tall Hall serves as a presentation space for reviews, featuring a large digital monitor and pin-up walls. On the third-level of Tall Hall are graduate and advanced studios and a number of faculty offices. Lastly, the room features a model of Broadacre City, a concept of the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

The second floor of Design South is home to the first and second year undergraduate studios. Known as “hot desks” these spaces are first-come first-serve and free to use for any intro-level students at the Design School. Unlike the “cold desks” which have locked drawers and are assigned to individual students in the advanced level studios, intro-level students are able to choose and share a locker for their supplies and materials. Students usually pair 2 to a locker, and there are a number of options in Design South on the second floor and basement levels.

Housed in the second floor of the NOVUS building, our research based Master of Science in Design and PhD in Design, Environment and Arts programs have dedicated office space for our students. Each student has their own desk and storage space to accommodate any need they have for the academic year. This office space also has breakout meeting rooms that can be used for meetings, interviews or group projects.

The Mirabella 101 studio is located on the bottom floor of ASU's Mirabella building. This studio is open to promote a sense of collaboration between major concentrations and different studio sections. Gallery of Design
Known as both the Gallery of Design and the Design South Gallery, this formal gallery space is located on the first floor of Design South and acts as a breezeway between the greater ASU campus and the Design School classrooms and studios. Adjacent to the Gallery is the Herberger Institute Office of Student Success and the Biomimicry Center.
The Gallery of Design features exhibitions on architecture, industrial design, interior design, landscape architecture, and visual communication design. Changing exhibitions showcase top student work for each semester, faculty research and design projects.
Biomimicry Center

The Biomimicry Center on the first floor of Design South offers two graduate-level programs online, as well as an on-campus certificate. One of many innovative ASU centers on campus, the Biomimicry Center is a joint effort between Arizona State University and Biomimicry 3.8 consulting firm. Biomimicry is an emerging discipline that seeks to emulate nature’s strategies and principles to create sustainable solutions to human challenges.
By asking the question: “How would nature do this?”, biomimics around the world are creating products, processes, companies and policies that are well adapted to life on earth over the long haul. Examples include turbine blades designed like whale fins to reduce drag and stronger fiber optics produced like sea sponges. MSD and PhD Office Space

Master of Science in Design and PhD students are provided desk space in NOVUS 210 for their research and studies.
Print/Computer Lab

On the second floor of Design North are the Print and Computer labs. The Print Lab is accessible by Design students 24/7, and also has student staff available to assist with printing during set daytime hours throughout the week.
The Print Lab is able to provide large format printing of 24” and 36” wide sheets, perfect for poster design and exhibitions. They also have standard laser printers, 11x17” scanners, and Wacom tablets to check out for free. The computer lab is equipped with 55 Apple iMac computers that are kept up to date with the latest technology and software necessary for all Design studio classes.

Biomimicry Center

The Biomimicry Center transcends traditional academic and institutional boundaries, engaging faculty, staff and students from numerous disciplines. Interdisciplinary partnerships include (but are not limited to) the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, School of Sustainability, W. P. Carey School of Business, Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, and School of Life Sciences.
Digital Lab
Basement
Located in the basement of Design South, the Digital Lab features 3D Printing, laser cutting machines, and large-format scanning. Unlike the Print Lab, the Digital Lab has set regular hours and students can only access the facilities by setting up an appointment. Students are able to work with staff onsite to learn how to operate the equipment and ensure their project is completed in a reasonable timeframe, as well as to the student’s specifications. MSIVD Studio

The MSIVD studio space is a place for Innovation and Venture Development students to meet both in and out of class to work on their ventures. The space includes moveable tables, chairs, and dividers, which allow students to create their own work spaces in which they’ll meet with their founding teams. In addition to the open space, there are several breakout rooms for students to hold meetings.
Terrace Gallery
2nd Floor
Across from the Print Lab, there is a beautiful outdoor space that we call the Terrace Gallery. You may also hear it referred to by senior faculty as “Old Charlie’s,” because this used to be the location of Charlie’s Café, which is now on the first floor of Design North! The Terrace is a common space for student organization meetings and events, but it’s also a respite work and recreational space full of natural light and pleasant weather during the cooler months.
The smallest and most intimate ensemble studio at our facility has the added benefit of the “floating floor” feature, which is also found in our recording studio. This air gap below the floor and above the ceiling reduces the sound that is able to pass through the floor to the rooms below and above, providing not just sound proofing but true sound isolation when coupled with all of the other absorption and refraction materials in the room.
Our medium ensemble studio is the perfect size for a full-scale popular music band to rehearse. Like our other ensemble studios, this room provides a pro audio PA system with subwoofers, an analog 12 channel mixer, digital pianos and synthesizers, a 5 piece drum kit, a Fender Twin Reverb guitar amplifier and a Fender Rumble bass amplifier. All of this equipment lives in each ensemble room and is ready to be used when inspiration strikes! Classes, rehearsals, lessons and even drum circles and beat making classes can be found in these Ensemble Studios each day.
Our main recording studio is made up of two completely interconnected studios. Studio A has a larger control room which is home to our SSL AWS delta analog/digital mixing console, as well as many of the expected industry standard pieces of outboard gear. The room is equipped with microphone preamps, equalizers, compressors and audio modeling units. Students receive hands-on experience patching all of the equipment and building a signal chain to color and fine tune the sounds of the source instruments and performances taking place in the studio live rooms as they are recorded into a Pro Tools HD session.
The larger versions of our practice rooms boast the same great sound proofing and equipment as our small recording studios while also including 5 piece drum kits for full band rehearsals.
These conference rooms-- boast digital displays, audio, and camera-- hosts Popular Music courses.

This large lecture classroom delivers dynamic content through cameras, video, and sound, ultimately building a collaborative network that allows knowledge to move beyond the lecture hall. Students, teachers, and guests can be present both virtually and in person.
Two additional small studios have large windows facing the open gathering areas on the second and third floors and upgraded colored lighting accents. These rooms also feature the same great sound proofing and audio equipment as our other rooms.
Studio B is our digital recording and mixdown room. Featuring Avid S1 control surfaces and a variety of outboard gear to choose from, this control room is focused on “in the box” recording and editing using Pro Tools. Our tiny telephone patchbays allow for cross patching between rooms so that any piece of gear can be used in either control room.
Live room B is home to our Steinway D Series Imagine piano. One of only 25 ever produced in the D series, this 9-foot concert grand piano is the top of Steinway’s line of concert pianos and is a part of the John Lennon Imagine series. The music rest is etched with the famous artwork John Lennon sketched for his self-portrait series in 1968, music and lyrics to the song Imagine, along with other pieces of Lennon’s artwork and a signature from Yoko Ono can be found on the piano’s internal frame.
Live Room A is home to our Yamaha Disklavier grand piano, Ampeg Heritage SVT bass rig as well as Fender, Mesa Boogie, Orange and Darkglass amplifiers. This Yamaha piano is unique because it is also a MIDI instrument and can be networked, which means that a performer can be in another state or even another country and connect to our instrument to perform in our studio with perfect precision. A performance on this instrument can also be captured in MIDI data and replayed back to the piano for a precise recreation of that same performance over and over again, allowing students to experiment with mic placement and really feel how small adjustments can have a large impact on the recorded sound of the instrument.
Our large format digital audio studio is a classroom equipped with workstations for large groups to learn everything from music production and mixing to sound design and composition. Any person in the room can wirelessly share the screens of their devices and audio from their Digital Audio Workstations with the entire class on the wall-mounted dual 100 inch displays and studio monitors. Every popular music room in our facility is networked with DANTE, Digital Audio Networked Through Ethernet. This means that lossless, zero latency multitrack audio can be distributed between any room in the building. We can take the multitrack audio from our main recording studio and share it with every student in the Digital Audio Studio lab so everyone can get in on the action and be a part of the recording session, each then working on their own unique mixdown.

Ten of these standard sized practice rooms are available to popular music students 24/7 for writing, production, practice, recording and everything in between. Each room includes a small format PA system, 6 channel mixing console and either a piano or a keyboard. Each room is sound proofed and acoustically treated with sound refraction and absorption panels.
Equipped with a pro audio line array PA system and a full concert lighting rig, this classroom is designed to teach concert production from top to bottom. Students are engaged with hands on experience patching a full concert PA system and designing lighting scenes and cues. Both analog and digital audio mixing consoles are available to students, including lighting computers and control surfaces to experience DMX address programming and theatrical and concert light show design. This space is used as a lecture classroom and as a learning lab. In addition, the tables are able to be cleared from the floor to use the space as a full concert rehearsal room. Whether mixing live musicians or using multitrack playback for virtual soundchecks, this classroom provides the full, real world experience of operating a concert venue.
Hello and thank you for your interest in the Popular Music Program and Arizona State University! This tour showcases some of the many amenities, features and equipment that students have access to on the Downtown Phoenix Campus at our facility, Fusion on First.
As the largest of our three ensemble studios, this showcase style rehearsal room features a viewing window from the main hallway and an entire wall of east facing windows for a beautiful view of the surrounding Downtown Phoenix area. Like all of our performance, recording and rehearsal spaces in the building, this room is acoustically treated with both absorption and refraction panels and a floated floor for exceptionally clear sound and low amounts of natural reverberation. Each rehearsal space is outfitted with high quality amps, PA, and instrumentation; this large scale ensemble studio is home to both group classes and ensemble band rehearsals.
This is a multidisciplinary and inclusive space open to any studies at ASU. Primarily designed as a rapid prototyping studio to bring new ideas into real objects. Collaboration between traditional methods and emerging technology is available through embroidery, 3D printing, vacuum forming, laser cutting, and CNC tools.
Fusion on First provides housing for upper division students. First-Year Herberger students are housed in Taylor Place. Within Taylor Place there is a dedicated floor for Herberger Institute students.
