The Sidney Poitier New American Film School at the Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center
50 N Centennial Way, Mesa, AZ 85201
The Sidney Poitier New American Film School operates across three cities: ASU’s Tempe campus, the ASU California Center in downtown Los Angeles, and the MIX Center in Mesa, Arizona. The school will operate its production and post-production activities out of the MIX Center.
The world-class Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center in Mesa, Arizona, which opened in fall 2022, hosts hundreds of students from The Sidney Poitier New American Film School and other schools within the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts who will be making films, designing new virtual worlds and video games, and creating other immersive media experiences of all kinds.
The MIX Center is part of the ASU at Mesa City Center complex, a collaboration between ASU and Mesa, Arizona, a city rich in history, art, community and industry. The MIX Center is located in the Salt River Valley on the ancestral homelands of those American Indian tribes that have inhabited this place for centuries, including the Akimel O’odham (Pima) and Pee Posh (Maricopa) peoples, whose care and keeping of these lands allows us to be here today. (For more information please see ASU Commitment to American Indian Tribes.) Located in the heart of Mesa’s Innovation District, the site serve as a laboratory for advanced media technologies and media production, a platform for game development and a driving force for entrepreneurial solutions. It will also be an open and inviting place for the public as well as a source of inspiration, entertainment and education.
The ASU at Mesa City Center complex also includes The Studios at Mesa City Center, an inclusive community space open to all, and the three-acre Plaza at Mesa City Center. Geared toward Mesa community members as well as students, faculty and staff interested in launching new ideas and seeking a connection space, the J. Orin Edson Entrepreneurship + Innovation Institute at ASU provides resources and programs to support current and aspiring entrepreneurs. The Plaza at Mesa City Center provides a public park with an event lawn, splash pad and shade structures. Situated in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area, this complex will connect students, faculty and Mesa residents through community, industry and art.
Here, a new generation of creators from Arizona and beyond will develop into the media and technology professionals we need in the 21st century.

Both Soundstage 2 and 3 are essentially identical. At 2,043 square feet apiece, both are up to industry standard for acoustic isolation, power distribution, dimmable lighting, overhead grids, and also feature the 15,000 pound Elephant Doors for easy load in and load out access. Preparations are being made to install a full size virtual production volume in Soundstage 3. The Mandalorian was one of the first major productions to utilize virtual production technology - so this will be a remarkable addition to the space - especially at an academic facility.

One of them is the Foley Stage (247B) - which is used for recording sounds in sync with the picture by a professional named Foley Artist. This is a technique that is currently used in most of the films, tv shows and games you listen to. The Foley pits, for instance, have different materials such as grass, concrete, gravel, dirt etc. that, with the artist’s shoes, make the footsteps and its variations sound natural and match the creative intent of the acting. All other sorts of sounds can be created in this space, including water-related ones using the built-in tub. Depending on the sound, it’s faster and more organic to use this technique rather than commercial sound effects libraries. Since the focus is set in on capturing dialog, almost every sound you listen to on screen is done in post-production.
